Werner von Siemens

Werner v. Siemens wasn't only an inventor and salesman but also a pioneer of social policy in industry. Already in 1872 he founded a pension fund for longserving, deserving employees. Profit-sharing bonuses were payed, the firm built recreation homes and in 1891 the introduction of the 8 1/2-hour working day was revolutionary in German industry. All this was combined with the creation of a permanent workforce, which was indispensable because the work became more diversified and mechanized.
Werner v. Siemens (1816 - 1892) was born in Lenthe nearby Hannover as the son of a tenent farmer. In 1847 he founded the Siemens & Halske Telegraph Construction Co. in Berlin together with Johann Georg Halske. After a very successful life as an inventor, entrepreneur and scientist he was knighted in 1888.


Siemens unit

Original model with which the "Siemens unit" (1860) is established, the parameter that defines electrical conductance and that is to be later replaced by the reverse parameter in 1881, the "resistance" that is measurable in Ohm.
